UT Health San Antonio’s annual family-friendly event highlighting science returns to the Witte Museum

This Fiesta, UT Health San Antonio’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) is hosting its annual Viva Science SA℠ on Saturday, April 9 inside the Mays Family Center at The Witte Museum.

Viva Science SA℠ was paused in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. Organizers are excited the free and family-friendly event makes its return. Attendees will experience interactive, hands-on science booths with fun activities for all ages, including a display of science-themed artwork.

Designed to foster engagement, Viva Science SA℠ will showcase the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs. The event is part of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences’ initiative to make science accessible for everyone.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to share our love for science with the public, especially with the next generation of scientists and researchers,” said David Weiss, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UT Health San Antonio. “With all the advancements we’ve experienced in our lifetime, Viva Science SA℠ gives us a chance to show that science is fun and that we encourage young minds to explore.”

The GSBS has over 4,000 graduates with a little over 700 remaining in and serving the San Antonio area.  Many graduates are employed in various areas including academia, military research, consulting and healthcare. Their contributions to science have a significant cultural and economic impact in the area, fueling San Antonio’s $42 billion biomedical industry.

High school, undergraduate, and graduate students will present posters of their academic research on the topics of cancer, cardiovascular health, diabetes and kidney health, infectious disease, longevity and aging, military health, neuroscience and regenerative medicine. Presentations are geared towards community audiences to raise awareness and support discussions of current science-related efforts and research, along with its respective impact in the community and on people’s everyday lives.

KSAT 12 Meteorologists Sarah Spivey and Kaiti Blake are this year’s keynote speakers. Spivey and Blake will share their expertise in atmospheric sciences and weather forecasting. Both meteorologists are advocates of STEM programs, as seen in their community work throughout San Antonio.

Event-goers can expect entertainment, music, ice cream and delicious foods from popular food trucks.  Viva Science SA℠ opens to the public at 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  For more information, go to vivasciencesa.com.
