UT Health San Antonio’s schools continue to garner national recognition for excellence in research, education and diversity.

Released in March, the U.S. News and World Report’s list of best graduate schools for 2023 ranked the Long School of Medicine and the School of Nursing programs among the best in the country.

The Long School of Medicine ranked 36th among medical schools training primary care physicians, up 10 spots from 2022. The school also broke into the top 50 in the category of research medical schools, ranking 47th — improving its position from 52nd last year — and ranked 25th in the nation for diversity.

“This is a remarkable accomplishment for our students, faculty and staff, and an achievement we are all proud of,” said Robert Hromas, MD, FACP, dean of the Long School of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs. “Their efforts over the last five years have made a huge impact on the health of not just San Antonio, but the region. Discoveries made here have been translated into important advances in medical care everywhere.”

The School of Nursing ranked 67th out of 158 qualifying programs for its doctor of nursing practice — a significant achievement for a program that launched in 2012.

“At UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing, we are doing everything it takes to develop diverse nurse leaders to improve health and health care through education, research, practice and community engagement. Our vision is to educate the next generation of nurses to promote health as an act of social justice and who will mirror the communities that they will serve,” said School of Nursing Dean Eileen T. Breslin, PhD, RN, FAAN.

UT Health San Antonio schools have a history of ranking among the best. Three graduate programs in the School of Health Professions have been highly ranked in the most recent U.S. News & World Report rankings for their respective professions. These include the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program, which ranked in the top 20% of qualified PA programs nationally at No. 33 out of 170. The occupational therapy program, which transitioned from a master’s to an entry-level doctoral program in 2018, ranked No. 42 out of 197 programs, placing it in the top 21% of programs. Rounding out the school’s rankings is the physical therapy program, which was ranked in the top half of programs at No. 102 out of 239.

“We have outstanding programs and are very happy to see them recognized nationally,” said David Shelledy, PhD, RRT, RPFT, FAARC, FASAHP, dean and professor of the School of Health Professions.

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences ranked 100 out of 290 in the publication’s list of the Best Biological Science Programs for 2022. And, while U.S. News & World Report no longer ranks dental schools, UT Health San Antonio’s School of Dentistry was ranked number No. 1 in 1993, 1995 and 1996, the last year the publication ranked U.S. dental schools.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio) is the primary driver of San Antonio’s $42.4 billion health care and biosciences sector, the city’s largest economic generator. UT Health San Antonio is the largest research university in South Texas with a research portfolio of approximately $350 million. Driving substantial economic impact with its five professional schools, a diverse workforce of approximately 7,200, an annual operating budget of more than $1 billion and a clinical practice that provides more than 2 million patient visits each year, UT Health San Antonio plans to add more than 1,500 higher-wage jobs over the next five years to serve San Antonio, Bexar County and the South Texas region.
