UT Health San Antonio teams up with San Antonio Brahmas to deliver game-day care

UT Health San Antonio is the official sports medicine provider for the San Antonio Brahmas, the local XFL football team.

A sports medicine team provides medical care for the team’s athletes with comprehensive care on the field for home games, ensuring the health and safety of each player. Offering access to UT Health San Antonio’s high-quality providers and vast services ensures each player’s medical needs are met and are prepared to succeed on and off the field.

 

UT Health San Antonio’s orthopaedic physicians Katherine Bartush, MD, head orthopaedic surgeon, and Ken O. Kenneth-Nwosa, MD, head team physician, lead the Brahmas local medical team. Sports medicine physician Caitlyn Mooney, MD, joins them, with orthopaedic surgeons Thomas DeBerardino, MD, and Philip Jacobs, MD.  

 

Brahmas players in their inaugural game.Other key specialties available for the on-the-field medical team include UT Health San Antonio anesthesiologists, rehabilitation medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, primary care physicians, emergency medicine, dentists, ophthalmologists, ear/nose/throat providers and athletic trainers. Each provider is an expert in their field and trained to respond to injuries received in a game.  

 

Together, the medical team focuses on preventing common injuries, recognizing and treating concussions, understanding the role proper stretching, hydration and nutrition play in keeping athletes healthy, and deciding when a player has fully recovered and is safe to return to play.

In addition to acting as the exclusive medical partners for the Brahmas, UT Health San Antonio’s orthopaedic providers currently serve as medical partners for the University of Texas at San Antonio Athletics and Soccer Central.
