PA Studies student wins scholarship from national health professions organization

Caitlyn Swopes, PA Studies student

Physician Assistant Studies student Caitlyn Swopes is one of 12 health professions students from across the nation chosen to receive the Scholarship of Excellence Award from the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP).

Swopes, who will graduate in December from the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program, is the only PA student among this year’s scholarship recipients. She is the School of Health Professions’ 2022 Presidential Ambassador Scholar and was the first student in the School of Health Professions’ Distinction in Research program.

“I’m humbled to be amongst these recipients who are considered to be future leaders in the allied health professions,” Swopes said. “I take such pride in being a representative of the PA profession and our university as a recipient of this scholarship.”

“Caitlyn is an excellent student and who has been deeply engaged in service and research,” said David Henzi, EdD, associate dean for academic and student affairs, who nominated Swopes for the scholarship. “She exemplifies the outstanding qualities required to win the ASAHP Scholarship of Excellence Award.”

Award recipients include students at ASAHP member institutions in programs including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, prosthetics-orthotics, biomedical science, communication sciences and disorders, genetic counseling and respiratory care. “I believe these scholarship awards are a testament to the unparalleled quality of health sciences and health professions instruction provided by ASAHP’s member institutions,” said ASAHP President Deb Larsen PhD, FASAHP. “I offer a hearty congratulations to each of these dedicated recipients who will become our future health care leaders.”

ASAHP is a national professional organization of 130 universities and employers focused on critical issues affecting health professions education. The organization will hold its annual conference Oct. 19–21 in Long Beach, California.
