Kimatha Grice Scholarship for Hand Therapy

Dr. Kimatha Grice is an occupational therapist with experience in numerous areas of practice and has specialized in hand and upper extremity dysfunction, becoming a certified hand therapist (CHT) in 1991. She teaches courses primarily related to the delivery of services to adults, as well as applied biomechanics. Her special areas of interest include splinting, assessments, ergonomics and addressing educational issues through the development of critical-thinking skills.

Dr. Grice participates in the faculty practice of the School of Health Professions, providing services primarily in orthopedic outpatient settings. She is highly esteemed, as she was recognized with a Presidential Excellence in Teaching Award in 2001 by UT Health San Antonio, and in 2008, Dr. Grice was inducted into the university's Academy of Master Teachers. In 2010, she was named a Distinguished Teaching Professor by The University of Texas System and was selected as the recipient of the School of Health Professions’ Spectrum Award in 2016. In 2017, she was honored with the Presidential Distinguished Service to the Institution Award.

She has a Bachelor of Science in Community Health from Texas A&M University (1978), a Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy from Texas Womans University (1980), and a Post-Professional Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from the University of St. Augustine (2013).

UT Health San Antonio students, faculty, and staff wish to establish the Kimatha Grice Scholarship for Hand Therapy, with the intention of creating an endowment to last in perpetuity. This scholarship will support scholarships for Occupational Therapy (OT) students enrolled in their third year of study and who express an interest in Adult Physical Dysfunction. Preference will be given to students with an interest in becoming Certified Hand Therapists.

In recognition of Dr. Grice’s decades of service and her passion for educating the next generation of hand therapists, initial funding to launch this effort has been received. While the ultimate goal of this fundraising effort is to create a permanent endowment, should the required funding level for an endowed scholarship not be reached by January 1, 2027, then any gifts made toward this effort will be directed to current use scholarships for students with interest in becoming a Certified Hand therapist.

If you have any questions, please contact Anna Chowdhury, Director of Development for the School of Health Professions, by email or by phone at 210-450-7308.
