PA Studies department chair wins Presidential Excellence Award

Dr. Paul B. Allen, Sr.

Associate Professor Paul B. Allen, Sr., DSc, MPAS, PA-C, FAAPA, FSAPA, chair and program director of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies at UT Health San Antonio, is the recipient of the 2022 Presidential Excellence Award for Distinguished Service to the Institution. His nomination for the award specifically referenced his leadership during the creation of a new PA studies campus location in Laredo.

The effort required numerous trips to Laredo to meet with community members and support staff, hours of preparing and reviewing accreditation materials, development of a new anatomy lab and related facilities in Laredo, personnel recruitment and hiring, equipping the student teaching lab, and recruiting and admitting students. Dr. Allen led the coordination of an interdisciplinary team of faculty and staff in the development of the new program over two years during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program successfully matriculated the first cohort of new PA students to The UT Education and Research Center at Laredo in 2021.

Dr. Allen and other 2022 Presidential Excellence Award recipients will be honored at a ceremony in April. For more information on this year’s winners, read this letter from UT Health San Antonio President William L. Henrich, MD, MACP.
