Shoe drive benefits Alpha Home residents

 

After volunteering at a recent pro bono clinic, physical therapy students recognized a need for shoes among those served by Alpha Home, a local nonprofit that supports residential addiction recovery treatment for women.

A good pair of shoes makes all the difference in rehabilitating a lower-extremity injury, said Julie Barnett, PT, DPT, MTC, an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy in the School of Health Professions.

Teaching future physician assistants is something Paul B. Allen Sr., DSc, MPAS, PA-C, FAAPA, associate professor and program director and chair of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies, plans to do for as long as possible.

That commitment is reflected in Allen’s selection as one of the recipients of the 2024 Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence–Sustained.

Let the games return: Students from across the school hold Allied Health Games for first time since pandemic

 

School of Health Professions students kicked off National Allied Health Week by reviving the Allied Health Games, a fun tradition that had been on hiatus for several years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Nov. 4, students from across the school participated in the games, including a sand volleyball tournament, tug of war, wheelbarrow racing and a team relay race. Teams were awarded points for having the best team spirit, being the best dressed teams and winning events.

Meet Anthony Mendoza, Jr: Respiratory Care Alum Pursues PA Dream

 

Students in the Division of Respiratory Care at UT Health San Antonio learn how to be valuable, contributing members of the health care team. Some of our respiratory care alumni go on to pursue other health professions. Take a moment to learn more about Anthony Mendoza, Jr., who graduated from our Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care program in 2021 and started our Master of Physician Assistant Studies program in May 2022.

SHP programs provide screenings and health and wellness info at Spurs Back to School Bash

 

Students and faculty from five programs in the School of Health Professions participated in the Spurs Give Back to School Bash on Aug. 5.

Several thousand children and adults attended the free community event, which included backpack and school supply giveaways, vaccinations, haircuts, eye exams, dental screenings, and a variety of other activities and services from community organizations and vendors participating in the event.

School hosts first-ever career fair for health professions students

 

The School of Health Professions held its first-ever career fair on April 27, bringing dozens of employers to campus to meet with students.

The school’s graduates are sought after by employers, said Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs David Henzi, EdD, FASAHP.

“The School of Health Professions educates a student population which is in high demand from local hospital and clinical settings,” Henzi said.  “It was great to have many of those partners in attendance for the first School of Health Professions career fair.”

Physician assistant studies students provided health screenings to attendees of a March 25 open house at The University of Texas Education and Research Center at Laredo.

Students performed Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure and glucose screenings, said Leticia Bland, DHSc, MPAS, PA-C, assistant professor/clinical and admissions chair of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies.

Free community health fair to offer screening, testing and healthy living information

 

All members of the community are invited to a health fair that will be hosted on April 1 by UT Health San Antonio’s School of Health Professions.

The health fair will provide an opportunity for people to undergo a variety of screening tests and receive important health information, said event organizer Terri Murphy-Sanchez, MS, MLS: CSMLS, ASCPCM, assistant professor and program director in the Division of Medical Laboratory Sciences.

Professor hosts podcast for — and about — Texas PAs

 

Physician assistants in Texas — and all who want to learn more about the PA profession — can now listen to a monthly podcast series hosted by a UT Health San Antonio professor and created with them in mind.

Launched in November, TAPA Talks is produced by the Texas Academy of Physician Assistants (TAPA) and hosted by Assistant Professor Steven “Tony” Skaggs, PhD, MPAS, PA-C.

Helping people is a way of life for new PA Studies professor

Growing up in Khartoum, Sudan, Assistant Professor/Clinical Micheal Habeab, MBBS, MS, witnessed the effects of widespread poverty. He decided to dedicate his life to helping others.

“My aim was to help poor people as much as I can,” said Dr. Habeab, who joined the School of Health Professions on June 1 as faculty for the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program at the Laredo campus, where he will begin working in July.

SHP students inducted into allied health professions honor society

Fifty School of Health Professions students were inducted May 5 into the campus chapter of the Alpha Eta Society, the national honor society of the allied health professions.

The induction ceremony was held virtually, said chapter president and Associate Professor of Physical Therapy Martha M. Acosta, PhD, PT, GCS.

PA Studies Class of 2021 posts 100% first-time pass rate on national exam

Every student in the Master of Physician Assistant Studies Class of 2021 passed the profession’s national certifying exam on the first try.

The 100% first-time time pass rate on the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE) is well above the national average of 93%, said Associate Professor Paul Allen, Sr., DSc, MPAS, PA-C, FAAPA, program director and chair of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies at UT Health San Antonio. “Our personal benchmark is that we want to score at or better than the national average,” Dr. Allen said.

Thirty years ago, Paul B. Allen, Sr., DSc, MPAS, PA-C, FAAPA, FSAPA, associate professor, chair and program director of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies at UT Health San Antonio, would not have guessed his future included leading an effort to increase the number of health care providers in the Laredo area.

In fact, Dr. Allen wasn’t expecting to work in health care at all. When he joined the U.S. Army, he was selected for training as a Special Forces medical sergeant, not as a Special Forces weapons sergeant, as he had hoped.

Physician Assistant Studies student Caitlyn Swopes is the School of Health Professions’ 2022 Presidential Ambassador Scholar.

Swopes has devoted a substantial number of hours to leadership and volunteer efforts, said Steven “Tony” Skaggs, PhD, MPAS, PA-C, assistant professor, associate chair and associate program director of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies.
