What is Public Health?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines public health as the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. This work is achieved by promoting healthy lifestyles; researching disease and injury prevention; and detecting, preventing, and responding to infectious diseases.

Our purpose is to introduce high school students to public health and the vast array of professions. There are a multitude of public health professions such as community health workers, epidemiologists, first responders, nutritionists, public policymakers, occupational health and safety professionals, sanitarians, and many more.

Your Commitment:

If selected, you must attend all five days of camp- June 19 - June 23, 2023.
You will be responsible for ensuring your final capstone project is completed on time by the end of the week.
We will invite you and your peers to present your final group project at the IIMS Community Engagement Symposium (TBD).

Eligibility:

Previous Public Health Camp participants are not eligible.
Rising 11th and 12th grade students for the 2023-2024 year (starting August 2023) from school districts in Bexar County, Texas. Students from private, charter, and home school networks may apply; however they must attend a school that is in Bexar County.
Reliable transportation required.
