A recent community survey by the South-Central Texas CEAL Regional Team reveals a high burden of chronic disease and related economic challenges among residents of Bexar County and nearby rural areas. Partnering with 17 local organizations, researchers collected 685 surveys to better understand health needs and barriers to care. The survey results are already guiding local outreach, grant efforts, and resource connection strategies by CEAL partners. The findings emphasize that improving health outcomes will require community-based support and broader efforts beyond clinical care.

Applicants Sought for the K12 Mentored Research Career Development Program in Clinical and Translational Science
Call for Applicants!
by wrayk@uthscsa.edu

The Institute for Integration of Medicine & Science (IIMS), home to the NIH Institutional Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) at UT San Antonio, is soliciting applications for the K12 Mentored Research Career Development Program. The K12 program targets early career faculty who have a professional doctoral degree or individuals who are completing postdoctoral training with an impending academic appointment. K12 Scholars are selected on a competitive basis and will embark on a 2-3–year program of intensive training in clinical and translational research and translational science, combining an innovative educational program with mentored clinical and translational research. Completion of the program is expected to position the K12 Scholar for a leadership role as an independent clinical and translational researcher/translational scientist in academic medicine, industry, or government.

The IIMS anticipates funding up to 4 new 2-3–year K12 Scholar positions available starting September 1, 2026. For each Scholar position, the IIMS will fund the first 2 years of a Scholar’s award, with the Scholar’s home department funding the third should the Scholar need it to obtain independent funding (individual K award or R01 or equivalent) as PI. A 1-page letter of intent, an NIH-format biosketch, and your department’s letter of support guaranteeing the third year of support are due Wednesday, January 22, 2026 at 5:00 pm. Application materials will then be reviewed, and selected applicants will be invited to submit a full K12 application due on February 22, 2026 at 5:00 pm.

All meeting times, application materials, timelines and link are available online at https://iims.uthscsa.edu/education/education/k12/ application-and-forms/.
For questions regarding the application, please contact K12 Project Manager Kathlynn Wray (wrayk@uthscsa.edu).
