Take advantage of the extended deadline and submit an abstract for the inaugural Advancing the Science of Cancer in Latinos conference on Feb. 21-23, 2018, led by Dr. Amelie Ramirez, a cancer researcher at UT Health San Antonio.
Latinos are expected to face a 142 percent rise in cancer cases in coming years.
The conference will unite health researchers, oncologists, professionals, leaders, and students to tackle Latino cancer on many fronts.

“We have seen substantial advancement in cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment over the past decades—but addressing Latino cancer health disparities has not nearly kept pace with progress,” said Dr. Ramirez, who directs the Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR), which will co-host the conference alongside UT Health San Antonio Cancer Center.
Advancing the Science of Cancer in Latinos will feature the state of Latino cancer and new research, and stimulate multidisciplinary collaborations for cancer solutions, Ramirez said.
Keynote speakers include:
- Dr. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, director, National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities
- Dr. Edith A. Perez, translational cancer researcher, Mayo Clinic and Genentech
Other presenters will unveil Latino-focused lab research, clinical best practices, and community interventions on: genetics, biological differences, access to care, screening tests, advanced cancer diagnoses, incidence and mortality rates, survivorship, quality of life, and more.
“This special conference will celebrate research advancements to date, explore new frontiers and gaps in this emerging transdisciplinary field, and kick-start discussion on research from bench to bedside to community to survivorship,” Ramirez said.
