Announcing new associate dean for research
 
Brij B. Singh, Ph.D., School of Dentistry associate dean for research and professor in the Department of Periodontics.

Brij B. Singh, Ph.D., joined the School of Dentistry this fall as the associate dean for research and professor in the Department of Periodontics. As the associate dean, Dr. Singh is responsible for the School of Dentistry’s research goals, including contributing to the broad body of basic and applied knowledge related to oral health including emphases on the needs of South Texas and disseminating that knowledge; providing opportunities for students and faculty to develop the skills necessary for conducting independent research programs; and developing a national and international leadership role in oral health related research.

Robert M. Taft, D.D.S., FACP, professor and chair of the comprehensive dentistry department, was installed as president of the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP). 


Faculty member and alumna recognized by Texas Academy of General Dentists
 
Faculty member, Kevin Gureckis, D.M.D., named Texas Dentist of the Year and Susan Putthoff, D.D.S., Class of 2010 was named Texas New Dentist of the Year by the Texas Academy of General Dentists.

Alumnus appointed director for continuing dental education
 

Scott Stafford, D.D.S., M.B.A., School of Dentistry Class of 1996, has been appointed director for continuing dental education. 

 


Dr. Stafford has owned and operated multiple dental practices in the San Antonio area that employed many of our graduates. He has been adjunct faculty at the School of Dentistry and, addition, helped start Practice Administration programs for University of Nevada, Las Vegas, East Carolina University and Roseman University of Health Sciences. He developed and maintains a web-based Practice Management program that is currently licensed and utilized by many dental schools across the country, including ours. 

Students awarded national scholarships
 

Two doctoral of dental surgery students have received national recognition with the Tylenol Future Care Scholarship and the Crest Oral B Scholarship.


Selina Fuentes, fourth-year doctoral of dental surgery student, President of the Hispanic Student Dental Association, was named the recipient of the Crest Oral B Scholarship. In collaboration with the Hispanic Dental Association, this scholarship is awarded to students who are committed to serving the Hispanic community and reducing oral health disparities.

 

Second-year doctoral of dental surgery student, Samantha J. Whitten, was awarded the national Tylenol Future Care Scholarship. The scholarship is given to students pursuing careers in health care.
