Congratulations to Dr. Meredith Zozus, PhD for being elected a co-chair for the CTSA Informatics Enterprise Committee. This committee focuses on utilizing modern informatics methodologies and techniques to support clinical and translational research, enhance training, and promote community engagement. By creating a data ecosystem and leveraging informatics technology, the committee aims to accelerate discovery of new translation science data.

IIMS Translational Science Training (TST) T32 Program

The goal of the Translational Science Training (TST) T32 Program at UT Health San Antonio is to enhance the quality and scope of the predoctoral research experience by offering stipend, travel, and tuition & fees support in combination with interdisciplinary research training and mentorship in Translational Science. This program is a benefit for both you and your mentor!

Community Engagement Small Project Grants

The Institute for Integration of Medicine & Science (IIMS) and the UTSA College for Health, Community, and Policy (HCaP) are seeking proposals for one-year Community Engagement Small Project Grants. Our goal is to promote, develop, and expand community and academic research partnerships for the translation of science from basic discovery to clinical practice, to public health benefit.

 

Funds may be used to develop or expand collaborative projects in one or more of these areas: 

Community-engaged research or assessment

Education or training 

Dissemination of research results, program features, or policy implications

K12 Mentored Research Career Development Program in Clinical and Translational Science
Now Accepting Applications!
 

The Institute for Integration of Medicine & Science (IIMS), home to the NIH Institutional Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) at UT Health San Antonio, is soliciting applications for the K12 Mentored Research Career Development Program (formerly called KL2). The K12 program targets early career faculty who have a professional doctoral degree or individuals who are completing postdoctoral training with an impending academic appointment. K12 Scholars are selected on a competitive basis and will embark on a 2-3–year program of intensive training in clinical and translational research and translational science, combining an innovative educational program with mentored clinical and translational research. Completion of the program is expected to position the K12 Scholar for a leadership role as an independent clinical and translational researcher/translational scientist in academic medicine, industry, or government.

 

IMPORTANT DATES:

Competitive Letters of Intent due: March 1, 2024 by 5:00 pm

Invitations to apply: March 20, 2024

Applications due: May 22, 2024 by 5:00 pm

Estimated funding start date: September 1, 2024

Program Project Pilot Funding
Request for Applications
 

The LSOM Office for Research is pleased to announce a Request for Applications (RFA) that are exclusively focused on developing Program Project Grant Applications!  

 

The RFA’s purpose is to support application development for NIH Program Project Grant submissions with up to $100,000 in pilot funding. Pilot funding will be available up to one-year, and an end goal of Program Project grant submission within 9 months post funding support. The research proposals should identify 4-5 Program Project investigators including the Program Director and 3-4 Cores that will be part of the Program application. The pilot projects should clearly identify well integrated teams, subject matter expertise, current extramural funding, and NIH agencies that support Program Projects.

All applications are due March 1, 2024. 

 

The Office for Research’s Assistant Dean for Research, Dr. David Gius, will offer grant editing and review to assist with final submission. Please share with your faculty and review the details in the RFA. Translational Technology Resource (TTR) Award

The Institute for the Integration of Medicine & Science (IIMS) is now accepting applications for Translational Technology Resource (TTR) awards to support genetic analyses at the single-cell level. The proposed research must have relevance to clinical and/or translational science.

 

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Proposals received on or before the 15th of a given month will be reviewed by the 15th of the following month.

2024 Virtual T1 to T3 in Minutes

T1-T4 in 3 (Minutes) is a cross-collaborative activity between the IIMS Community Health Advisory Board, Office of Research Education & Mentoring, and Community Engagement. This virtual challenge highlights multidisciplinary UT Health SA research projects that fall within the spectrum translational science.  Presenters share their research in 3 minutes to a live, mixed audience of community members, students, and faculty – with 1 slide. Presentations must be made with language and concepts that are compelling and easy to understand without a lot of scientific jargon. Community members, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to register and learn about exciting new research.

GenCure and UT San Antonio Sign Agreement for Cell Therapy Collaboration
 

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and GenCure, a subsidiary of BioBridge Global, signed a master services agreement to collaborate on the development of cellular therapy products, services, and testing.

The expanded agreement between GenCure and the UTSA Stem Cell Core Lab provides UTSA with research starting materials and GenCure receives capability development and testing services. GenCure will provide starting materials for UTSA researchers to facilitate the isolation and subsequent reprogramming of adult stem cells to generate induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).

News from the Hill
The 118th Congress convened earlier this month for its second session and largely picked up where unresolved items were left at the end of the first session. Most notably, Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 appropriations have not been completed and another short-term Continuing Resolution (CR) was enacted before the first tranche of agency funding was scheduled to run out on January 19th (which would have triggered a partial government shutdown).
